The questions behind the question

Questions about bloating.

Why am I bloated?

Bloating can have several explanations, including gas, eating habits, constipation and other digestive conditions. A short check cannot tell them apart. What you notice about timing, meals and bowel habits can help you describe the problem; persistent or concerning symptoms need a clinician’s assessment.

NIDDK: gas symptoms and causes
Does a swollen belly mean I have too much gas?

Not necessarily. Bloating is a feeling of fullness or swelling; distention means the abdomen becomes visibly larger. They can occur together, but they are not the same thing. The feeling alone does not identify its cause.

Should I cut out a food after using this check?

This check does not diagnose food intolerance or recommend an elimination diet. Keep the whole meal and surrounding context in view. If symptoms keep returning, a healthcare professional or registered dietitian can help decide whether a dietary assessment is appropriate.
